High Five for Friday

TGIF!  Happy Friday, happy Halloween, and happy kick-off to my birthday weekend to me!  My birthday is actually on Election Day here in the US (go vote!), and I'm starting the celebrations now. Tonight we're trick-or-treating with Kane and swinging by a Halloween party.  Tomorrow is the Garth Brooks/Trisha Yearwood concert, and Sunday is the UK v. UPIKE exhibition game.  UK is where I went to law school, and UPIKE is my undergrad, so my loyalties are divided.  But that's all for next week's #H54F.  Let's recap this past week:

1. We went to a local pumpkin patch on Sunday.  It was hilarious to watch Kane at the petting zoo part of it.  He wanted to watch the animals but not necessarily pet them.  I think he may have petted a goat, and that was enough for him. We didn't actually walk out in the pumpkin patch, because Kane was done by that point.  Overall, though, he had a fun time, even if we didn't get 1 good pic!haha

2. Whitney Scheibel, of Whitney Scheibel Photography, shot some photos of my little family on Saturday.  I met Whitney in undergrad, and it was nice to catch up.  To top it off, she does some amazing work!  Below is a preview of our shoot.  Once she's done with everything, I'll share some more of her shots--I'm going to do a post about how to style family pictures without being matchy-matchy.

3.  I love when Kane brings home art projects he's done at daycare, especially when they're holiday themed!  Check out the cuteness!

4. My new phone arrived as expected, and I'm so glad I chose to go with the new Note!  My favorite part about it (besides the size) is the camera feature!

5. We got our house cleaned from top-to-bottom.  While I loathe cleaning, I sure like how great it feels when it's all done!  As part of said cleaning, I was able to get my tiny closet organized, and I have some cheap closet organization solutions to share with you here.  I had a pretty big walk-in closet before, so it's been an adjustment to fit everything into the space I have now.

Quick Jewelry Fixes

I absolutely hate when something happens to a piece of my jewelry.  Since I often find it on sale/clearanced, it's not always possible to replace.  And even if I could just replace it, that's not very budget friendly.  So when 2 flowers popped off of my new blue necklace, I set out to find a solution.
I first tried to just hot glue the flowers back on, but they didn't stick good and just popped back off.  I knew I needed something more heavy duty.

When googling my issue, I kept running across E6000 as the go-to for gluing jewelry back together, so I picked some up at Hobby Lobby.  Beware, though--after getting it home and reading the packaging, there are several warnings, so READ the packaging careful and use all precautions!

I also have several statement necklaces that I would like to hang down a little bit more, so I picked up the chain extenders.  This is the quickest fix of them all--just clip it on to your chain and you're done!

Finally,  I have a bracelet that was custom-made, and it's a hair too short.  I got some of these little rings to extend the length just enough to make it perfect.

Silver Jump Rings, $1.99 at Hobby Lobby.*
E6000, $3.99 at Hobby Lobby.*
Chain Extenders, $2.88 at Walmart.
*You can use Hobby Lobby's weekly coupon towards the purchase of the first 2 items.

I'm so relived to have my jewelry fixed, both quickly and cheaply.  Thank God I no longer feel like I have to throw it out!  What's your favorite jewelry fixes?  s

Closet Organization Solutions for Small Spaces

Our townhouse has small closets, and small closets and close hoarders don't mix.  And after having the luxury of a bigger walk-in closet, closet space is #1 on my must-have list for our next house. Right now,  I share the closet in our master bedroom with my son (I have also taken over the hall closet.  Hubby is relegated to the guest bedroom closet).  So what's a girl to do?  Get creative!  The only issue is that home organization can become expensive very quickly, but I have some picks that won't break the bank.  Warning: my closet is still full, but it's now organized chaos!

If you need advice on how to get your closet clean enough to even starting organizing, you can read my post here for a checklist of what to do!

You can pin this post simply by hovering over the picture above and clicking the red Pinterest logo that pops up!
1. Add wire shelving.  You can buy different sizes of wire shelving, and then cut those into pieces that fits your closet.  If you go this route, you will probably also need some end capsbrackets,  and other hardware.   Still, you're probably looking at around $25 to transform your closet if it is small.  My closet is probably 5 or 6 feet wide, and started out with just 1 wire shelf across the back.  I added 1 wire shelf on the left side up high, then 2 wire shelves on the right side (think enough space to hand 2 rows of shirts).  I also added wire shelving all along the top of my closet, over the original shelving, to store my purses.

2. Switch to slim velvet hangers.  When your closet is small, every millimeter of space counts, because it adds up and can equal a lot of lost space.  That's why I made the switch to slim velvet hangers.  I put it off for a long time because of pricing, but Sam's Club had packs of 35 hangers for only $10!  I know Costco also used to have a very similar deal.  If you're not a Sam's Club member, you can search online for a free one-day pass--you just pay an extra 10% on your purchase. That's the best deal I have found on them, but I found a pack of 20 hangers here for $8.99.   These have made such a different in making the most of my tiny space!

As you can see above, I still have a few hangers left to switch over.
3. Use storage bins/cubes.  I have found several inexpensive storage solutions lately at Target.  First, these fabric cubes (listed online for $6.99, but the ones shown below are the same brand and came in 2 packs for $9.99) are perfect for storing my pants/skirts.   They're meant to be used for the hanging storage and the cube storage shelves, but I've found that they do a great job simply free-standing.

I use this bigger fabric bin to store my camis in, and this plastic bin to store my scarves in (link is to the larger size, shown below is the medium size).

These storage solutions help me keep my items organized and off the closet floor (are you guilty of the toss-and-pile storage method?).    The sum total of all of the bins/cubes shown is less than $40!

Are you having small closet woes?  Have you found any creative storage solutions for your small spaces?  Let me know in the comments below!

High Five for Friday

TGIF! This week has been much slower paced than my last 2 weeks.  Yay for having time to catch my breath! Let's recap:

1.  The birthday bandwagon continued this week.  My mom's birthday was last Friday.  We went out to celebrate her birthday on Saturday night.  It was a low-key dinner at a local restaurant that we love. Happy birthday, Mom!  My mom is twenty years older than me, but that age gap has seemed to narrow as we've gotten older:)  She's pretty amazing.  Then on Sunday, I took Kane to a birthday party for Al, the daughter of one of my best friends.  It was at a play place and the kids had a blast! Happy birthday, Al!

That would be pizza on his chin!  He was having the best time!

2. New phone time!  For those of you who follow on me on Twitter, you may remember that I was tweeting with CSRs from the major nationwide carriers.  I have had Verizon for something like 7.5 years, but I felt that they were too expensive.  One of their CSRs, however, sent me a private tweet and we were able to add more value to my services.  Then, I was able to talk to another wonderful Verizon CSR last Friday that got me a pretty awesome deal on a new Samsung Galaxy Note 4.  If you're looking for a wireless carrier, I would suggest looking at Verizon.  If you have Verizon but you're thinking about leaving, like I was, give them a call and see what they can do for you! It's supposed to arrive at my office today--eek!  So excited!

3. My Target Beauty Box arrived, and I was very happy with the value vs. money spent ($7 for $27+ worth of items).  The one thing that I wasn't expecting to like was the lip product.  I thought the color looked too blah, but I put it on and it turned out to be amazing!  The feel of the product put me in mind of the NYX Butter Gloss.

4. Since I've had some downtime, I've been catching up on all of my blog reading.  Caitlin over at Coffee with Caitlin posted this amazing tutorial for a DIY Mason Jar Chandelier!  Isn't it gorgeous?!  I also finished the new Rick Riordan book I was talking about last week, as well as Jude Deveraux's new book called Change of Heart.

5.  Can I just say how much I love fall?!  October to December is my favorite time of year!  When we were back home last weekend, the hills were stunning with all the leaves changing colors.  I'm also enjoying the cooler weather, because it means that I'm getting to wear this vest more (hold off on purchasing, though--this vest was cut down to $20 just a few days ago, so wait til it goes back on sale!).

How to Christmas Shop Like a Pro

If you haven't already started Christmas shopping, then you're behind the game.  Seriously.  I start shopping almost immediately after Christmas is over for the next year.  Now we're at the point that Christmas is only 2 months away! Do I have you worried? Don't be! If you've been a slacker on the Christmas shopping, here's some tips to make sure that you not only get your shopping done, but that you don't make your bank account/credit cards cry during the process.

Photo Credit: Dakota Maynard Photography, 2013.

Step 1:  Make a list.
This step should go without saying, but you need to make a list of everyone who made your nice list this year. That way, you know how many people you need to buy for and you hopefully don't leave anyone off the list.

Step 2: Set a budget.
While this is Step 2 on the list, it is the most important step!   Determining a Christmas budget is a 2-step process in and of itself.  First, determine the total amount of money you want to spend.  You can make this a range or a hard number, but be serious in making the determination so that you can and will stick to it!   If you're using the Simple Budget method, then it should be fairly easy to see how much money you will have to put towards Christmas gifts each paycheck. Then, allocate your budget amongst everyone on your list by setting price-points for how much you want to spend for each of them.  Not only does this save you from overspending, but it makes it much easier to narrow down online shopping when you can search by category and price!

Step 3: Start early and shop sales.
We've already established that you're behind in the game if you haven't already started Christmas shopping, but it's still better to start now than in late November/early December.  Like I said, I purchase gifts year-round, and stick them in a gift closet until needed.  This allows me to purchase items on sale as I find them instead of having to pay a premium on them later in the year.  I can't tell you how often I've found the perfect gift for someone 9 months in advance.  Also, this keeps you from missing out on or having to pay a premium for a gift you wanted to purchase if it becomes a hot item closer to Christmas.

Be sure to sign up on stores' mailing list to get coupons and notices of sales.  You can also browse Slickdeals.net, which is a favorite deal-finding website of my husbands!

And let's not forget comparison shopping!  By starting in advance, you have time to compare the best prices and wait to have it shipped or picked it up from the cheapest place!  Many stores have also started price matching items--check your local stores policies.  Some have become quite generous!

Step 4: Know when to buy--whether or not to wait til Black Friday.
There are no words adequate to describe my love for Black Friday.  That said, you don't have to wait til Black Friday to shop for everything (refer back to Step 3).  What should you wait for Black Friday to purchase?  Kids toys, electronics, small kitchen appliances, movies, and jewelry are all things that come to mind.  That said, over the past several years, stores have really been outdoing themselves in bringing out the deals earlier and earlier.  You can always google a store's Black Friday ad from last year to get a sense of what items they put on sale for Black Friday and how their price-dropping generally works. No, stores don't always have the same exact item on sale, but they tend to put the same types of items on sale. I'll have a Black Friday Survival Guide closer to the day.

Step 5: Use Ebates!
If this is the 1st you're hearing about Ebates, you can get up-to-speed on it with my post here.  I love Ebates, and I tend to really rack up the cash back around this time of year!  Even better, I can apply my latest Big Fat Check rebate to my Christmas shopping and really save some extra money! Ebates is a great way to stretch the budget a little farther too!  If you haven't joined yet and would like to, click here.

If you were panicking a little over Christmas, I hope this post helps!  I know so many people put shopping off until the last minute, but by Christmas shopping like a pro, you can take that time to focus on the things that matter most:)

Target Beauty Box Review

Evidently, 'tis the season for beauty boxes!  Not that I have a problem with that--you guys know that I love a great deal, and that's exactly what these boxes offer!  Shortly after I received my Walmart Beauty Box, I found out that the Target Beauty Box was back and had to order it.

The Target Beauty Box has been around for awhile, but unlike the Walmart Beauty Box, it's not a subscription.  You just have to order it when it becomes available, and they usually go fast.  So far, there's not really been any rhyme or reason to when Target releases its Beauty Box.  The last one was released in early spring of this year.  At $7, it's $2 more expensive than the current Walmart Beauty Box.

Here's what was included in the Target Beauty Box this time around:

  1. Elnett Extra Strong Hold Hairspray, 2.2 oz ($6.69)-- I love this hairspray!  It provided a nice hold, and the spray nozzle is awesome!  I would buy this hairspray for the nozzle/spray mechanism alone.  How many of you all have ever screwed up the nozzle on a regular hairspray?  Yep, thought so.
  2. Fekkai Professional Blowout Hair Refresher Dry Shampoo, 1.7 oz ($7.99)-- I haven't had a chance to try this out yet, but I have been wanting to every since reading this review.  For me, the secret to finding a good dry shampoo is to find one that has some sort of starch as an ingredient, which this one does (tapioca starch, I believe).
  3. Laneige BB Cushion (sample, full size is $34)-- This sample contains all three shades that the BB cream comes in.  It's an interesting concept in that the BB cream is a liquid soaked into a sponge, and you press a puff (included in the sample) against the sponge.  Then you apply the BB cream with said sponge.  The product went on great and covered well, but I don't think I'll be paying $34 for it anytime soon.
  4. NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk* ($4.49)--The color goes on smooth and stays in place.  I used this pencil to highlight my brow bone and the inner corner of my eye.  Because the pencil was so white, it required some blending but otherwise worked well.
  5. L'Oreal Colour Riche Extraordinaire Lipstick in Blushing Harmony* ($7.99)--I was apprehensive about this color at first, but I tried it on and loved it!  It's basically an amped-up version of my normal lip color, and is a color that will wear well all year long.  I really like the applicator, and the formula was moisturizing, not sticky.  Great drugstore lip product!

* Colors may vary.

Overall, this box was a great deal for the price.  For $7, you get $27.16 in products (not including the BB cushion sample, because I couldn't find a price for the sample)!  There's also a coupon for $3 off of a $15 Target Beauty Purchase.  How awesome is that?!  I highly recommend ordering this box if you like trying new beauty products, but beware that not everyone is going to get the same colors in the eye pencil and lipstick.

You can order the Target Beauty Box here.

What's your thoughts on all of these beauty boxes?  Are you loving them, or are you over them?

High Five for Friday

TGIF and happy Friday!  I hope you've had an excellent week:)  Is it just me, or do the weeks keep getting shorter?!  It seems like they just fly by anymore.  Let's recap:

1. I finished up my midterms! I am so glad to have that over with.  I kept having flashbacks to law school-ugh!*
*I wish I would have started writing this blog when I was in law school.  Oh, the posts that would have came out of that adventure.

2. Monday was Chauncey's 29th birthday.  This is the 12th birthday I've spent with him (we were high school sweethearts).  On Sunday night, I got a baby sitter and told Chauncey it was so the 2 of us could do dinner along.  In reality, we met up with a group of friends at Drake's, played trivia, and had an all around good time.

Collared shirt: Target--this is the sailboat top that was so popular this summer, $13.98 (no longer available).
Hello Sailor sweater: Bluetique Cheap Chic, approx. $10 (no longer available)
Necklace: Purple Peridot, $8.18 (currently $14.99)
Chauncey's hoodie: Old Navy in Ink Blue, currently $16.99.

Then on Monday, Kane and I took Chauncey out to Old Chicago to eat. OC is one of our favorite restaurants, and if you're a member of their World Beer Tour club, then you get a free pizza during your birthday month.

Look at that belly sticking out.lol  I promise his shirt fits, but he was twisting around so much it wouldn't stay down.

3.  I cleaned out my closet this week.  I have alot of clothes but not a lot of closet space, so it takes some shuffling to make everything fit without overflowing.  And let's be honest--sometimes, the overflow can't be helped:)  I took out all of my summer clothes that don't transition well into fall to make way for my winter clothes.  Now I just need to sort through my shoes. . . .  If you're in the same position and need to clean out your closet, but don't know where to start, I have some advice for you here.

4.  I'm loving that Homeland is back on!  We started watching the show when it first premiered, because it came on after Dexter, and we absolutely love it!  We also just started watching House of Cards and I'm hooked!  And to hop to a related subject, does anyone read the Rick Riodan YA novels?  The last Heroes of Olympus book just released, and I can't wait to finish reading it!  It's unusual for me to not finish a book in 1 or 2 sittings, but I just haven't had the time yet.

5. And we have a winner from our blog giveaway--congrats to Ashley Payne!  Thank you to all of our readers who entered!  I had so much fun hosting this giveaway with Della Devoted and KT Cup of Tea blog.  They are truly awesome girls, and I hope you'll hop on over and check out their blogs if you haven't already!

How's YOUR week been?  Find any good deals?  Got your hands on some of the Cake Batter Chapstick? Have something totally awesome happen? Let me know in the comments below!

Favorite Lip Products for Fall

I used to never take the time to both with lip product.  I would use some lip balm or lip gloss here and there, but that would be it.  It's just been in the last several years that I've started to really enjoy using lip products.  Looking back at the time, I'm sure that Birchbox, as well as the first couple of blogs I read, influenced me to pay more attention to my lips.

When looking for a lip product, I want something that tastes decent and hydrates my lips.  Ooo, and a nice color too (when applicable)!   Here lately, I've found several amazing lip products to share with you!

1. L'Oreal Glossy Balm in Innocent Coral (Walmart, $6.97).  I received this product in my Walmart Beauty Box, and I'm in love!  It's easy to apply and makes your lips oh-so soft!  The color is the perfect pick-me-up for the sometimes gloomy weather this time of year, and will brighten-up your face!

2. NYX Butter Gloss in Raspberry Tart (purchased for $2.99, reg. $4.99*).  I kept reading about this product on different blogs.  When I walked into Ulta and found it 40% off as part of their weekly specials a few weeks ago, I had to try it.  The color payoff is great, and it makes your lips feel fabulous!  This purple-y shade is perfect for fall!   Also, nude lips are making a comeback this season, so give this a try in Eclair, Apple Strudel, or Fortune Cookie if you'd like to go that route.
*Currently BOGO 50% off at Ulta and can combine with the $3.50 off $10 Ulta coupon)

3. Chapstick--Cake Batter flavor (Walmart, $0.98).  This product is a must-have for fall and winter. It tastes amazing (not waxy) and is super-soothing to your lips.  Also, this stuff is evidently hard to find, and it is going for ridiculous prices online.

4. Cailyn Art Touch Tinted Lip Gloss Stick in Love Affair ($19.00).  This shade is a very on-trend color for fall, without being too dark.  I had been wanting something in this shade-range for a few weeks, and just happened to get it in my Ipsy glam bag for September.  Beside the color, I also really like the non-sticky formula.

This time of year, it's especially important to take care of your kisser so that it doesn't get chapped. These options make that easy, fun, and, most importantly, affordable!

What's your must-have lip product for fall???

Reminder: Don't forget to enter the two giveaway I have going on with Della Devoted and KT Cup of Tea Blog!  You can enter the one on the blog below, and head on over to Instagram to enter the other.

Falling into Basics Giveaway

If I've said it once, I've said it a 1,000 times: accessories are the easiest (and cheapest!) way to switch up your wardrobe!  They can dress up even a plain t-shirt and instantly make you look put together! And since fall has arrived, I definitely want to switch things up a bit.

So if you're like me and looking for some budget-friendly wardrobe updates for this fall, I would suggest purchasing 2 basic items: an infinity scarf in fall colors and a gold-tone statement necklace. Both items are very on-trend at the moment.  Also, they will help to transition any carry-over clothes from summer to more fall-friendly looks.  And so long as you shop around, you should be able to easily purchase both items for $25 or less--especially if you win the one's we're giving away below!

I've teamed up with Katie from Cup of Tea Blog and Della from Della Devoted to bring you not just one, but TWO giveaways to help you get fall-style ready!  The first giveaway is here on the blog and you can enter below via Rafflecopter.  We've giving away a teal and navy infinity scarf and a long, gold tassel necklace as a thank you to our special readers!

The second giveaway is the #fallingforneutrals giveaway over on Instagram, and will go live at some point tomorrow (Thursday, 10/09).  We're giving away 2 other fabulous fall updates--a black dot bracelet and the new Urban Decay Naked 2 Basics palette (this season's must have eye palette)! Head over to my Instagram and find the picture below for details on how to enter!

Good luck!  We'll announce the winners of both giveaways on October 16!

Target Beauty Box NOW AVAILABLE!!!

As most of you know, I'm finishing up my MBA this semester.  I have mid-terms this week, so I may be a little MIA.  Right now, I'm curled up with my laptop and one of my cats finishing a paper and some discussion board posts that are due tonight.  That said, I had to take a study break to let you all in on the good news--the latest Target Beauty Box is now available!  Thanks to cocoforbeauty for the heads-up!  The last time these released was way back in the spring (pictured below).

Picture of my last Target Beauty Box--I hope I love the new one just as much!
Anyways,  you can order the latest Target Beauty Box (NOT PICTURED) here.  It's $7 this time around (up from $5 last time) but ships for free.  And unlike Walmart's beauty box, this is just a 1 time order.  Based on Target's website, it includes some products I can't wait to sample:

High Five for Friday

Be sure to stop back by next week.  There may just be not 1, but 2 awesome giveaways going on starting Wednesday-ish.  If you need some fall updates to your wardrobe and beauty routine, then you'll want to enter!

TGIF!  As schoolwork for the semester starts to pick up, I'm beginning to feel a little stressed. Sometimes it's not easy to juggle everything that I do, but it's certainly worth it in the end.  Anyways, even with the stress I've had an awesome week! Let's recap:

1.  It was an all around good ticket week!  I GOT GARTH BROOKS TICKETS--lower level!!!! AHHHHH!!! Trisha Yearwood will also be performing with him, so my level of excited is through the roof!!!  Oh, and it just so happens that the concert is my birthday weekend:)  Then on Sunday, I got to go see my all-time favorite movie, Gone with the Wind, in theaters!  It was an amazing experience to see it with a theater full of people!  One of my favorite quotes: "Rhett Butler is the only cause I believe in."--Rhett Butler.  Rhett, I can get behind that;)

2. In addition to getting my tickets last Friday, it was also a day for parties.  Kane had a fall festival at daycare, where they sang fall songs, had fall treats, and painted itty-bitty pumpkins.  It was adorable, but Kane was ready to come home and sleep.

After we left, I dropped Kane off with my neighbor and headed out to meet up with Chauncey at a pool party.  Yes, an outdoor pool party in late September.  The pool was heated and it felt fabulous--until it was time to get out:)  I always love seeing Chauncey's work family.  They're so much fun!

3. My Walmart Beauty Box arrived!  You can find out what was in it and find out how to sign-up (super cheap) here. I was shocked at how awesome it was.  I had set my expectations kind of low, but the beauty box blew me outta the water!

Why yes, that would be one of the infamous blanket scarves,  Click the link above to find out where to purchase for $12.99!

4. I also think outside the box when it comes to my outfits, but I really pushed outside of my comfort zone for this week's Wardrobe Re-Wear.  The colored pants were pretty standard, but the intense pattern-mixing and wearing a dress as a skirt were new to me.  I loved both looks, though!

5.  October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  I wear pink for my Mamaw, two of her sisters, and countless others who have battled breast cancer.  Earlier this week, H.M. Willow made an exciting announcement on their Instagram.  During the month of October, not only will they be donating a portion of their sales from their "Pink Page" to getting mammograms for women in need, but they were looking for names of women who have battled breast cancer to name their pink bangles after, as a way to honor them.  I teared up as soon as I read that and nominated my Mamaw, Mary Lillie, suggesting that the Lillie would be a perfect name for a bangle that I would be proud to wear.  She beat breast cancer a decade ago before passing away while battling lung cancer 2 years ago.  She taught me the meaning of being a survivor.

H.M. Willow's pink bangles went live night before last, and there among them was the Lillie.  I of course had to order several of the bangles that were named in her honor.  You can shop the Lillie, as well as the other pink bangles, here.
