When Your Kid Takes THAT Picture with the Easter Bunny. . .

Before Kane was born, I used to imagine the perfect holiday photos my precious baby would take. And he totally delivered on them the first year.  He sat with Santa and the Easter Bunny and looked at the camera while we got some beautiful pictures.  It was perfect!

Then came the second round of holiday photos.  Anyone remember the Christmas one???haha Well, Kane has done it again.  Done what?  NAILED his holiday pictures with the Easter Bunny. . .and by nailed, I mean this:

And you know what?  This picture is just as precious and just as perfect as the ones from the 1st year. That photo is pure Kane, and straight-up hilarious.  I like to think that one day, he'll look back and appreciate these pictures just as much as his momma did.  So when your child takes THAT holiday photo, embrace it. Realize that a kid is just a kid, and they're bound to be unpredictable.  Don't be disappointed because they didn't look right at the camera and smile.  Don't forgo buying the pics because they weren't perfectly posed.  These are the memories that you'll look back on one day and miss with every fiber of your being.  Oh, and it's pictures like this that you can break out when they start dating.haha

Now, while Kane despised the Easter Bunny, he loved the real bunny!  I love these pictures too:)

I offered some tips taking Santa photos with a toddler in this post, but they really apply to any pictures you're wanting to have done with your little one.  Also, if you live in the Lexington Area, I highly recommend heading to Lexington Green to do pictures with the Easter Bunny--that's where we always go for Kane's pics!  The experience was fun as usual, and you can even scheduled an appointment in advance so you don't have to wait in line.

How'd your Easter Bunny pics turn out?  Do you have any funny pics like Kane's?

High Five for Friday 03.27.15

TGIF, H54F-ers!!! Caitlin at Coffee with Caitlin, Della at Della Devoted, Katie at Cup of Tea, and myself want to welcome you to the link-up and the weekend.  We made it!!!

This week's featured blogger is Nancy from NY Foodie Family.  This family loves food, and the blog is very reflective of that! You can follow along for recipes and a variety of reviews, including reviews about restaurants, subscription boxes, and books.  The last H54F post included the news that a Disney vacation has been booked!  How exciting!!!!

Now, let's recap the week:

1. The Cats have advanced on to the Elite 8!!! GO BIG BLUE!  I posted a Wardrobe Re-Wear this week that features my new UK shirt.  You can see both complete looks here.  I'd love to see how you adapt it for your own team!  Please tag me if you try out either look.  Oh, and you can score 1 MONTH FREE for Rocksbox. . .details in the Wardrobe Re-Wear post!

2. Target has released the Lookbook for Lilly for Target!!!AHHHHH!!!  I want it all.  Seriously.  I'll be in line the day it releases.  I'm surprised at just how affordable everything is.  Is anyone else excited for this collection?!  What's on your all's wish lists??? (Anytime now, Kate Spade. . .anytime. . .)

3. The weather was amazing on Wednesday.  We're talking 75 + sunny.  Kane loved getting to play outside.  I'm so thankful for our new house--he really has room to get out and play.  We're also blessed with some fabulous neighbors, who I'm enjoying getting to know.  That said, I heard my least-favorite 4-letter word in the forecast for tomorrow. . .snow. Seriously, Mother Nature?!  March Madness if for basketball, not the weather!!!

4.  Kane had a wonderful playdate with his friend L on Saturday.  We went out to eat with L and her mom at one of my favorite restaurants, and then headed back to their house to chill.  It's nice that Kane's at the age where he loves to actually play with other kids.  They were too cute together!  I also enjoyed catching up with my friend.  It had been too long since our last get-together.

5. My hair lady was able to get me in for an appointment very last minute yesterday.  She worked her magic and I'm loving my new style!  Ginger is one amazing hair artist, and I always leave feeling like a million bucks.  Thanks, Ginger:)

Also, I've gotten a lot of questions about blogging lately.  While I'm far from an expert, I'm thinking about doing some posts about how to get started, etc. Thoughts?

Ipsy March Glam Bag

How cute is this month's Glam Bag?!  I love the floral theme and color mix.  It's just so happy (the kind of happy I am when I get my Glam Bag in the mail.haha).

Any month that an NYX product is included in my Glam Bag is automatically a good Ipsy month! While this month's bag didn't top last month's bag, it was still lots of fun.  Here's what I got:

1. DR. BRANDT SKINCARE Pore No More Anti-Aging Mattifying Lotion
This lotion was good.  I think it was mattifying and I think my pores were slightly less noticeable.  I won't be switching from my current lotion because I like it just as well and it's much cheaper, but this entire sample will definitely be used.

2. CHELLA Ivory Lace Highlighter
I received one of these in my previous life as a Birchbox subscriber.  The color is okay and formula is good.  At the end of the day,  however, I'm just not a huge fan of pencil highlighters (I prefer powder).  This is good, however, to throw in a bag for on the go touch-ups.

3. NYX COSMETICS Butter Lipstick
Shade: Little Susie
My love affair with NYX continues strong.  I love this product just as much as its sister, the Butter Gloss.  The Butter Lipstick is super moisturizing and richly-pigmented.  And this color is perfect for sping:)

4. MARSK Mineral Eyeshadow
Shade: Lucky Penny
While I really like the pigmentation of this eyeshadow, I hate the shade.  I've never been a huge fan of copper-toned eyeshadow.  While this has a pretty shimmer, the color just doesn't work well for me, especially not in the spring.

5.  SEXY HAIR Soy Renewal Creme Oil
Ever since I had got pregnant with Kane, my hair texture changed.  While it's always had a slight wave to it, it's requires a little more smoothing nowadays.  I also color my hair, so I really like to use a light styling cream when I blow dry to help the overall state of my hair.  I really like this creme oil. It has a light fragrance that smells great, and my hair felt healthier/smoothing after using it.

For those of you who are on the fence about subscribing to Ipsy over Birchbox, you can read a little bit about why I chose to switch here.  I think Ipsy is better if you love makeup, while Birchbox is better if you like a mix of products (hair, beauty, etc.).

Wardrobe Re-Wear: Gameday Edition + Rocksbox

March Madness is upon us, and UK is still in the big dance!!!  I was a proud member of the BBN before I went to law school, and my 3 years there just solidified my status.  It's been a while since I've added a new Kentucky shirt to my collection, so I wanted a new one to wear during tourney play.  I found this one at Victoria's Secret and loved it!  It didn't hurt that they also had 7/$27 panties and were giving out Secret Rewards cards;)

OUTFIT 1: Colored Skinnies

Since tons of other fans will also be sporting the same colors on gameday, I like to mix my outfit up a bit and throw in some bright colors.  Here, I've done that with my neon pink jeans, Origami Owl necklace, and wristlet.  Also, how fun are these shades?!  I love the Rayban version that has been seen all over Instagram, but there were a Target steal for $16.99!

The cuff on the top left is from Rocksbox.  Rocksbox is a jewelry subscription box that is $19/month.  In each box, you get 3 pieces of jewelry to wear on loan.  You can send the contents of your box back in whenever, and get 3 new pieces to wear! You can read all the details here. The service is awesome because the pieces are more expensive ones that I wouldn't necessarily buy for myself because of the price.  You can try your 1st month for FREE by using code BRIGHTONABUDGETXOXO, but this code is only good until April 9, 2015!  If you try it, let me know what you think.

OUTFIT 2: Tulle Skirt

For a more dressy look (think office or date night), I switched up my accessories and switched the jeans for a tulle skirt.  I think the tulle skirt is a fun switch-up as it really dresses up the tee.  The skirt was a recent Maurices clearance rack find for $7.50.  The necklace was an $8 eBay find (I've seen it as much as $25+ elsewhere!).  And here's the purse that I was talking about a while back--isn't it adorable in real life?!

Shirt: Victoria's Secret Pink (similar, similar| Pants: JCP (similar, similar| Skirt: Maurices (similar
Bangles: H.M. Willow (pink); Starfish Bangles (blue) | Origami Owl Necklace
Crystal necklace: (here for $13.50 w/ free shipping) | Wristlet: Lilly Pulitzer (sold out)
Purse: Merona (Target--accessories currently BOGO 50% off) | Sunglasses: Target
Flats: Versona Accessories (similar)

No matter which team you're rooting for (though I hope it's UK), you can use these ideas to put together some really cute gameday outfits!!!  So which team are you rooting for? How's your bracket looking?  I didn't have time to fill out a bracket this year, but it's pretty clear who I'm hoping to see in Indy:)

High Five for Friday 03.20.15

TGIF, H54F-ers!!! Caitlin at Coffee with Caitlin, Della at Della Devoted, Katie at Cup of Tea, and myself want to welcome you to the link-up and the weekend.  We made it!!!

This week's featured blogger is Jaelan over at Making Mrs. M.  Jaelan is a vet tech from Texas, and she met her husband online (I love online dating stories!).   Like me, she blogs about beauty, life, and style.  I love her most recent post Battle of the Palettes--Naked Basics vs. Naked Basics 2.  I had such a hard time deciding between the two, but I came to the same decision she did.    I found her last H54F post, 5 Pieces of Blogging Advice that Saved My Tail, to be full of helpful information!

Now, let's recap the week:

1. Bright on a Budget is 1 year old!!!  You can catch my blogiversary post here.  In case you missed it, there's a fun little giveaway to enter.  And if you're new around here, there's a good round-up of posts from the past year:)

2. Kane is growing by leaps and bounds.  Chauncey took him to a birthday party on Saturday night, and Kane climbed up the big bouncy slide all by himself and then went down the slide all by himself!!! It scared me to death to watch the video of him, but he had such a great time!

3. The NCAA tourney has begun!  I'm a HUGE Kentucky fan, and I'm hoping we go all the way this year!  Here's a Flashback Friday pic from when I was at the 2012 National Championship game in New Orleans.  That was one crazy roadtrip, to say the least.  GO CATS!!!

4. I've been in a shopping mood this week.  I'd had my eye on these J. Crew Factory flats for a while, but had held off on buying them.  When they finally went 30% off and free shipping, I clicked the checkout button on my cart.  Then Victoria's Secret is having their 7 for $27 Panty Party (who else misses the $25 price?), so I swung by to pick up panties and a new UK shirt.  I had the transactions rang up separately, so I scored 2 Secret Reward Cards.  And a new NYX Intense Butter Gloss was called for--I needed a spring lip pick-me-up.

Shirt is not online, but here's a cute one that's similar.
Shoes: wait until these go an extra 30% off again.
Please note that during the VS trip, Kane had a major meltdown.  We're talking 5 alarm meltdown where I wanted to melt into the floor.haha

5. I'm still getting prizes from the Instagram giveaway that I won several weeks ago!  One prize was a one-month subscription to Sugar Spice and Sparkle's Bow of the Month Subscription Box. How adorable are these 3 bows?!  I also received this floating locket from Personalized from Me to You, which I love.  Oh, and I found out I won a Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC bag from some of my favorite bloggers:)   I can't wait to style it and share a little about the hosts with you all.

One Year Blogiversary + Giveaway

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!!!  And happy one year blogiversary to this little blog!  I can't believe it's been a year since I took a leap of faith and started this blog.  Since then, I've connected with many other bloggers, enjoyed getting to know my readers, and took over the High Five for Friday linkup (with 3 of my good blogging friends) from one of the bloggers who inspired me to start blogging in the 1st place!  How's that for a 1st year?!  It's been fun developing my blogging style, and figuring out what I liked layout-wise for the blog.

For those of you who are new around here--or for those of you who may have missed some of these--here's some of my favorite posts from the past year.  The titles are pretty descriptive, so you can pick and choose if you'd like to read any of them:

Welcome to Bright on a Budget (the post that started it all!)
Bright [Online Shopping] on a Budget: Ebates (don't shop online without it!)
High Five for Friday 05.01.14 (an early H54F post)

This outfit is old and I couldn't find a similar pair of pants to link-up, but you can find these adorable shoes on sale here for $19.99!

Finally, I want to give a huge THANK YOU to all of you for reading my blog and being the driving force that keeps it going.  As a way to express my appreciation, I wanted to do a giveaway of some of my favorite things--a $25 Target giftcard, a Salem Swank bangle (you may have seen mine on Instagram), and 2 NYX Butter Glosses.  Good luck!!!

Today's photos are by April Brooks. April is a friend of mine who does photography on the side.  If you like her work and would like to get in touch with her, please send me an email at brightonabudget@gmail.com!

High Five for Friday 03.13.15

TGIF, H54F-ers!!! Caitlin at Coffee with Caitlin, Della at Della Devoted, Katie at Cup of Tea, and myself want to welcome you to the link-up and the weekend.  We made it!!!

This week's featured blogger is Chelsea over at Red Velvet Rooster.  Chelsea's blog name really caught my attention, because I love red velvet anything. . .evidently, she does too:)  She has this adorable little boy, and blogs about life and food.  Trust me, there's all kinds of yummy things on her blog.  Last week's H54F post included some 70 degree temps (so jealous) and an adorable bunny garland.

Now, let's recap the week:

1. This post is going to start out a little bit differently and a little unexpected.  My aunt (or Sis, as I called her), who I was very close to, passed away yesterday after a long battle with cancer.  Now, this is definitely not on my list of great things about this week, but she's on my list of great things about my entire life and deserves to be celebrated.  She was a big supporter of this blog, and she shared most of my posts on her FB.  She always believed in me, and was ready to go after anyone I ever had a problem with. . .she was a spitfire to say the least.  So this post is dedicated to her--love you always, Sis.  A special thank you to all of my readers and blogger friends who have kept her in their thoughts and prayers since I posted that she was having trouble a few weeks ago.  I truly appreciate all of the support from you wonderful people!

PS--She would totally have gotten a kick about being on the blog.
So even though this has been a terrible week, I'm still sharing my favorite things about the rest of the week, because life is too short not to appreciate the things that make us happy.

2.  Spring has sprung!!!  Yay for warmer weather, no jackets, and fun spring shoes, like these.

3. My teeth are reasonably white, but I've wanted to use some Crest Whitestrips for forever.  I've had to hold off, thought, because I was pregnant and then I was breastfeeding.  Since I stopped breastfeeding in December, I finally ordered the 3D Luxe Whitestrips.  The box came with 2 samples of the 1-hour express Whitestrips, so I used one of those first.  I'm in love with the results and can't wait to use the Luxe ones.

Speaking of breastfeeding, I finally sat down and wrote a post about breastfeeding.  If you're a new mom, or momma-to-be, I shared my must-haves for nursing moms here.

4.  The new house is slowly coming together.  We now have a garage door opener and an over-the-range microwave installed at the house.  Guys, it's hard to survive without a microwave when you don't cook.haha  Oh, and Target is having an amazing home sale.  We got this turquoise console table (reg $149) for $90 after the 30% discount, $10 off a $50 home purchase with code DECORATE, and my 5% Target RedCard discount.

5. The Cats are 31-0 for the season!!!!  Now on the SEC tourney this weekend.  GO BIG BLUE!!!

Must Haves for Nursing Moms

Breastfeeding can be so intimidating.  I watched an educational video on it while pregnant and was scared to death (seriously), but everything turned out fine.  And while everyone's breastfeeding experience is different, Kane and I had a pretty easy go at it.  I told myself I hoped to make it 6 months, then 6 months turned into 12 months, and 12 months turned into 18 months.  I actually just stopped nursing him in December.

Nursing was an amazing journey for us.  I think that being prepared makes it a little easier, though, so I wanted to share my must-have products for nursing moms.

Must-Haves for Nursing Moms

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6 // 7

We really enjoyed Tommee Tippee products.  We used the smaller 5 oz bottles for probably the first 4 months (Kane was a daycare baby at 9 weeks old) and then switched to the bigger bottles.  Kane also really like their pacifers.  They have really tiny ones for newborns, and they really soothed Kane when he got the hang of keeping the paci in his mouth.*
*Some people caution against nipple confusion with pacis, but our pediatrician told us not to worry about it.  At the end of the day, follow the advice of your healthcare professional.

I loved the Udder Cover nursing cover!  It was lightweight and breathable, so I didn't feel like I was smothering Kane.  And best of all, there's always codes out there to get one of these covers for free--you just pay shipping.  One code I found was PJBABY.

Kane's daycare is very close to my office, so I was able to go over and feed him on my lunch break, but I also had to pump throughout the day.  I used the Lansinoh double electric pump and loved it!  Be sure to check with your insurance company to see if you can get a free electric breast pump.

Lansinoh has some other great products, including the nursing pads above.  I also liked their milk storage bags better than the Babies 'R Us brand and the Medela ones, but found that the Up & Up Bags from Target were very comparable to the Lansinoh ones, and cheaper.

Nursing can take a toll on your body, so I relied a lot on the Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter.  I read rave reviews online and it's pretty awesome.  Also, simply rubbing expressed milk on your nipples after feeding can help out too!!!

Finally, I think that it's important to find a good nursing bra.  My favorite was this one from Motherhood Maternity.  The straps were thin and easy to clip and unclip.  The material was comfortable, and, more importantly, the tops of the cups didn't sag or roll (this is happened with several other nursing bras I tried).

Now, at the end of the day, I think you have to do what makes you comfortable and what works for you and your baby, whether it's breastfeeding or formula feeding.  Either way, your baby will get the nutrition he or she needs:)

High Five for Friday 03.06.15

TGIF, H54F-ers!!! Caitlin at Coffee with Caitlin, Della at Della Devoted, Katie at Cup of Tea, and myself want to welcome you to the link-up and the weekend.  We made it!!!

This week's featured blogger is Monica over at Jersey Girl, Texan Heart.  Monica is a corporate girl who not only blogs but also has her own Etsy shop.   She shares some fabulous outfits that she puts together, and she mixes in other posts as well.  I found her H54F post last week to be very uplifting:)

Now, let's recap the week:

1. Snowmegeddon 2.0 has struck.  I'm over the snow.  The total snowfall for Lexington over the past 2 days has been 17.5".  On the upside, Kane had a great time playing out in the snow. . .until he took his gloves off and his hands got cold.  He especially loved eating the snow.  In the picture below, he's not even playing in the deep snow.

w
2. Snowmageddon 2.0 has also allowed me to get to know my neighbors a little better!  We made a community trip to Sam's Club and Papa John's last night because I have an AWD.  I ended up with a gigantic bag of mini Reese's Eggs.  Yum!!!

3. All of this snow has me thinking of how I'm going to style my spring outfits.  It has also given me plenty of time to window shop online.  If you're looking for some spring wardrobe updates that won't break the bank, see my post here.  Warning: the pool blue/mint pants sold out super quick because they were on clearance, and are no longer available:(

4. I won another giveaway!  Thanks to the girls over at the Sequin Notebook, I won some Pearlties!!!  Thanks, girls!

5. I finally got around to posting my February Glam Bag from Ipsy.  One of my samples actually broke during shipping, and I received my replacement item yesterday.  While it wasn't the same exact item that was broken, it was very similar.  I think it's awesome that they will replace a broken sample--thanks, Ipsy!!!

Finally, I want to thank you all for all of the wonderful thoughts and prayers for my aunt last week. Please keep them coming.  Also, it seems like many of us have been having a few rough weeks here lately--it's ok to be honest and just say it.  I hope that better weeks are ahead for everyone, and I'm so thankful for the uplifting posts I've come across when reading your blogs this week!

February Ipsy Glam Bag

I thought this month's Ipsy bag would never arrive.  Where we moved so quickly, I didn't have time to change my address, so I had to wait for my mail to be forwarded.  It was especially hard to wait because the early sneakpeek of my Glam Room had me highly anticipating my glam bag's arrival.

1. CARGO COSMETICS Mini Lip Gloss
Shade: Anguilla
My skin stays in some weird state where it's combo skin by nature, but really dry because of my topical acne meds.  This product worked fairly well and I really liked the packaging of this sample.

2. HEY HONEY Take It Off Exfoliating Honey Peel Off Mask
I haven't tried this product yet, but plan to do so soon.

3a. 'TINI BEAUTY Rob Scheppy for 'Tini Beauty Eyeshadow (not pictured)
Shade: Pearl Fizz
I was really excited to try this product, but it was broken on arrival.  The shade was very nude with a slight shimmer to it.  I'm hoping to be able to put it back together using the alcohol trick so that I can use it in the future.

3b. MEDUSAS MAKEUP Eyeshadow
Shade: Headhunter
This product was a replacement for my broken 'Tini Beauty Eyeshadow.  The formula seems to go on smooth and had good color payoff.  I don't know how much I'll actually wear this shade, but it is quite pretty!

4. LUXIE BEAUTY Large Angled Face Brush 504
I love makeup brushes, so this was right up my alley.  This brush is great for apply the blush that also came in this month's glam bag.  The bristles are soft and it blends really well.  This brush is $16 to buy, so that more than makes up for the $10 cost of the Glam Bag!!!

5. MODELCO Blush Cheek Powder
Shade: Cosmopolitan 01
What a great complement to go with the face brush!  I really love the consistency of this blush.  It's easy to apply and the color is buildable.  The shade is perfect for spring to give your cheeks a pop of color.

For those of you who are on the fence about subscribing to Ipsy over Birchbox, you can read a little bit about why I chose to switch here.  I think Ipsy is better if you love makeup, while Birchbox is better if you like a mix of products (hair, beauty, etc.).

Spring Wardrobe Updates

After all this snow, I'm ready for spring! And nothing says spring quite like pretty colors and fun shoes.  If you're looking to update your wardrobe for spring, here are some of my picks that won't break the bank:

Spring Wardrobe Updates

one // two // three // four // five // six // seven // eight // nine

The ear jackets are on trend for spring, as is the hot pink boyfriend watch (I really like this one because it was the correct roman numerals for 4--IV not IIII).  Pastel blue and mint are two of my favorite colors for spring.  And I've already picked up the leopard-print shoes--I'm just waiting for a day when there's not snow on the ground to wear them.

You all know how much I love a good handbag, but I didn't include any in my picks because I did a whole post dedicated to handbags for spring that you can find here.  I brought home the lilac one:)

What pieces are you looking to add to your closet this spring?  Let me know in the comments below!

I'm linking up with the girls at Tuesday Talk and Rachel at Garay Treasurers for Bloggers Who Inspire Me.
